Council Connections
July 2010 Update PDF Print E-mail

Whew! I just conducted my first Council meeting as your new Congregation President. I was a bit anxious about the whole thing: fussing about whether the order of the agenda was correct; Do I understand the Treasurer’s report? How many is a quorum? What about Robert’s Rules of Order? All my worrying was for naught. The council members made me feel at ease and business was conducted. Following are highlights from the June meeting:

  • Ministry committee liaisons were selected.
  • Youth- Micah Gorans; Finance- Jim Bany; Building & Maintenance- Joe Grillo; Fellowship- Terri Buxton; Worship and Music- Jay Nau; Christian Ed- Kelly Hjelmeland; Evangelism- Ermine Todd, III; Social Ministry- LaRayne Rowland; Stewardship- Carol Dougall
  • Council voted to establish a Seminary Support Fund.
  • Regular Council Meeting time changed from 3rd Thursday of the month to 1st Tuesday of the Month.
  • Fellowship and Social Ministry Committees to work on feasibility of holding another Advent Dinner in December and report to Council at August Meeting.

I feel the Spirit working at Calvary and look forward to the coming year and the growth of our ministry.

Wow, how quickly a year can pass!  Thank you all for allowing me the honor of serving as your council president this year.  Throughout the year my faith has constantly been strengthened by watching how God works through our congregation.

Whether it is through our support of Family Bridge or our relationship with Western Farm workers, or the Advent fund raiser for Holiday support, Calvary’s members are working every day to make the community we live in better.  Our partnership with Community Action, making a portion of our Good Sam Fund available to that organization, dramatically increases the reach and scope of our support for the needy in Hillsboro.  The Social Ministry team is busy!

Through the Fellowship committee’s many events our church family bonds are strengthened every day as well.  Our Christian Education committee has been hard at work to be sure that our education experiences are interesting and fulfilling.

The Worship and Music committee has done a wonderful job making our weekly worship experiences creative and fun as well as empowering, spiritual and God/Jesus centered.

Building and Maintenance is constantly working miracles to keep our building functional and comfortable.

Our youth advisor Micah and his committee are working hard to give the young adults in our community interesting and fulfilling activities

Our finance and stewardship committees have kept an eye on our money and kept us solvent during very difficult times.

My role as president of the council has been easy and stress free because of the hard work and dedication of your council members.  It was a great combination of newer members and experienced hands bringing their unique perspectives and wiliness to try new things.  Everyone could be counted on to share their views and experiences with patience and a sense of shared duty and passion.  Thank you to all of this year’s council members for a fun, fulfilling and successful year.

Peace and love,

Bartt

Council President

What a wonderful Holy Week at Calvary! I always enjoy the duality of the somber Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services countered by the joy of Easter and this year's wonderful musical Palm Sunday.

"Jesus Christ, Superstar" has always been one of our family's favorites. Thanks to everyone that made that production possible. On a less dramatic, but no less impactful, note thanks to everyone who make the Easter cross of flowers happen. Every Easter I eagerly wait to see what color the cross will be this year. Sometimes yellow, sometimes red but always beautiful and a wonderful symbol of the hope and joy that Easter represents for all Christians throughout the world.

The broad range of activity that happens over Holy Week reminds me of the wide variety of work that is accomplished every week at Calvary because a bunch of people simply roll up their sleeves and get it done. I know we can't all be on the hip and exciting Finance and Stewardship committees but, believe me, there is just as much fun to be had on the other committees as well. At the Annual Meeting Part 2 on May 2, please take the time to read each of the committee reports and marvel with me at the amount of work that gets done and the number of people that get helped. Hopefully, reading the reports will give everyone a better understanding of all the work that needs to be accomplished for Calvary to live out its mission. Perhaps reading the reports will encourage even more of us to find a program or task that calls us to step in and join the fun.

I'll see you all at the Annual meeting in May.

Peace and Love,

Bartt, Council President
